Development and Health

and another here about the start of the NHS. This short animation on the National Health Service Scheme stars Charley. It was to show the public how the main services would affect an ordinary family, including Charley's wife - even if he did consider her 'as strong as a blooming horse!'

The first census in the United Kingdom was taken in 1801, and since then a census has been taken every 10 years apart from 1941.

Health in EMDCs

In just 10 years, a child born in the west of scotland will die younger than a child born anywhere else in Europe. Good case study to use in exams here.
Scotland's DREADFUL reputation as the sick man of Europe is confirmed today with the publication of a major new study that reveals some of the poorest areas of eastern Europe will shortly overtake our levels of life expectancy. Death rates among young Scots men are rising due to violence, suicide, drugs and alcohol, a pattern that is not repeated elsewhere. And a higher rate of middle-aged women in the west of Scotland are dying because of cancer, heart attacks, stroke and liver disease.
Many of the factors directly contributing to this poor health - such as smoking, too much alcohol , obesity and poor diet - are well known.

In about 10 years time, the west of Scotland will have the lowest life expectancy of all the regions, while residents in the poorest areas in Poland and the Czech Republic are expected to be living longer.

Diseases of EMDCs

A new report tell us to lose more weight, stop eating bacon butties and keep our drinking habits well in check if we want to reduce our risk of cancer. Even those who are not overweight should slim down if they want to cut their risk of cancer, a major international study has claimed. The World Cancer Research Fund carried out the largest ever inquiry into lifestyle and cancer, and issued several stark recommendations.
RECOMMENDATIONS INCLUDE:
Limit red meat
Limit alcohol
Avoid bacon, ham, and other processed meats
No sugary drinks
No weight gain after age 21
Exercise every day
Breastfeed children
Do not take dietary supplements to cut cancer
