China changes the Weather-possibly.....

The snow that fell on Beijing last week was the heaviest for many years. It was also, China claims, man-made. Some areas of farmland in the north of China were suffering because of drought. So on Saturday night China's meteorologists (weather experts) fired 186 explosive rockets with chemicals to "seed" clouds and encourage snow to fall. The US has tried this in California. The chemicals fired into the sky, usually dry ice or silver iodide, are supposed to provide a surface for water vapour to form rain. But there is little evidence that it works – after all, how do we know it would not have rained anyway? Such doubts have not stopped China claiming tha they did control the weather. Officials said the blue skies that were over Beijing's parade to celebrate 60 years of communism were a result of cloud-seeding. In 2008, more than 1,000 rockets were fired to ensure a dry night for last year's Olympic opening ceremony. As interest grows, so does concern about whether such techniques, known as geoengineering, are good for the planet and humans. "If climate change turns ugly, then many countries will start looking at desperate measures," says an energy expert ." Geoengineering worries experts for two reasons. First, the massive side effects; what it could do to the world's rainfall, for example. Second, once started, geoengineering would probably have to be continued, as stopping could bring lots of changes in climate.
With a lot of potential disasters some say, there must be a law against geoengineering. What do you think?

There is no winter in the UK any more

Climate change is expected to bring winters that are both milder and wetter to Scotland. THE age-old signs of spring, which does not officially arrive until the Equinox on 20 March, are beginning to sprout months earlier than the norm. Many flowers are already in bloom. What do you think? Read the rest here.

Is this related too?
Only February and the hayfever season is already upon us.Superdrug confirmed remedy sales have risen by a quarter over the past few weeks. And Boots has seen a 24 per cent rise – with sales of some particular brands nearly doubling. Boots pharmacist Sarah Cameron said: "It's earlier than in previous years."

Climate Change

The tropical belt that circles the Earth is expanding north and south, which could have severe consequences for large regions of the world where the climate is likely to become drier or more stormy.
“Most importantly, poleward movement of large-scale atmospheric circulation systems, such as jet streams and storm tracks, could result in shifts in precipitation patterns affecting natural ecosystems, agriculture and water resources," scientists say. "An increase in the width of the tropics could bring an increase in the area affected by tropical storms, or could change climatologically tropical cyclone development regions and tracks," they say.
Australia is one of the countries likely to be worst affected by the shifting tropics because westerly winds bringing much-needed rain to the continent's arid south coast are likely to be pushed further south, dumping their water over open ocean rather than on land, scientists said.

Climate change conference
The two-week gathering in Bali, Indonesia, will also debate how to help poor nations cope in a warming world. At the top of the conference's agenda is the need to reach a consensus on how to curb emissions beyond 2012.

Google to work on new power source

Google aims to develop cheap and clean sources of energy to replace polluting fossil fuels and tackle global warming. The company said last night it would invest "hundreds of millions" of dollars in the project.
Google will focus initially on solar thermal power, wind power, geothermal power.Read here. And the BBC article here.
Rich or poor to do something about Climate Change?
Read this article to see who will suffer and why. Monsoons have affected 14 million people in India, seven million in Bangladesh and three million in China which has seen the heaviest rainfall – and second highest death toll – since records began. Cyclones hit Indonesia, the Philippines and Vietnam. Hurricanes hit the Caribbean and Central America, killing more than 1,600 Mayan people in Guatemala. Droughts have once again affected Africa, driving 14 million people from their homes.
In the rich world, insurers report an increase in climate-related insurance claims – 5 times normal. In the poor world the cost is counted in terms of hidden human suffering and death. Read also this article here.

Global Warming

OK I know this video is nothing to do with the picture but I liked it! Indulge me.

Scientists in Brazil say global warming is responsible for the destruction of a small coastal town. Watch this video.

The UN has called on governments to set tougher targets to halt climate change.

Watch this video on the latest thought on this matter.

Dump it in the Sea?

Pollution in the seas is now speeding global warming, says a devastating new climate report. People are rapidly turning the seas acid through the same pollution that causes global warming, the world's governments and top scientists agreed yesterday. The process – thought to be the most serious change in the chemistry of the oceans for 20 million years – is expected both to disrupt the entire web of life of the oceans and to make climate change worse. Scientists add that, as the seas become more acidic, they will be less able to absorb carbon dioxide, causing more of it to stay in the atmosphere to speed up global warming. Yet the report also concludes that, while some climate change is now inevitable, its worst effects could be avoided with straightforward measures at little cost if only governments would take action. The UN Secretary-General, agreed. The effects of climate change have become "so severe and so sweeping" he said "that only urgent, global action will do. There is no time to waste." The rest of this lengthy and weighty article is here but try to read your way through all of it. The future of the planet may depend on you!

Climate change. Will it affect me?

Read this good info on the BBC site here on this topic for revision or just general interest – after all if you want a future it IS up to you.

Finally David Attenborough gives us all a stark warning. Sir David Attenborough has called on governments to take action to stop global warming becoming a 'catastrophe'. Watch here.

This is another good BBC site on the same topic. This video shows how a glacier has retreated dramatically because of global warming. Will it still be there in 50 years time?
NORTHERN MELT Returning to the Arctic, Kari Herbert is shocked to discover how the ice has changed. Watch here.
Try the climate challenge game here – not thrilling but good theory behind it.

Environmental Issues revision for S4

Can you spare a few minutes from your hours of revision(!!!!) to watch these videos? Remember to look at the other links to these on the right and use them!

Rather less seriously……

And finall Do you REALLY think the Canadians are in favour of global warming or is this “ironic”? I hope so because otherwise it is even more nonsense than I thought!

China 'to be largest energy user'

China is set to become the world's largest consumer of energy by about 2010. China's rapid economic growth has created an increasing demand for natural resources. But the burning of fossil fuels is already having an impact on China's environment, causing widespread pollution. The IEA report says China's increasing consumption will also make it the world's largest emitter of the greenhouse gases that cause climate change. Read the rest here.
Why not look at the information here on the greenhouse effect also.

Freak weather conditions

Look at this video on a freak hailstorm in Colombia, South America. Is this the other effect of “global warming”?

Massive floods in southern Mexico have destroyed or damaged the homes of as many as half a million people.
The military has helped to evacuate thousands of people in the states of Tabasco and Chiapas. Read the BBC article here.

New resources for Higher Atmosphere on Global Warming here.
The sections which relate directly to the course are :1) Climate change is real (the section explaining how global warming works) and2) Are we responsible for global warming?Remember that the Higher course doesn’t expect you to know about consequences of global warming nor about strategies to minimise climate change.
This may also be of interest to S3 and S4 who. I know (!!!!) are revising at present for their prelims.

A little reminder about the environment

Hats cause global warming.

Environmental Issues video here with some good points to remind S4 in the run up to your prelims about this topic and for the rest of us to think about our actions in every day life. Pity the council thinks You tube is bad for us though and has blocked it. Lets hope you can all see this at home. Theres also a good animation here to look at on Global Warming.
What about this one? Hats cause global warming.

Now the real thing.

Inconvenient Truth Inaccuracies

The atmosphere is becoming more humid in a pattern consistent with man-made climate change, researchers have found. Read the article here. Al Gore's film has been criticised as well as praised but there are clearly a few errors which should be highlighted.
Error one
Al Gore: A sea-level rise of up to 20 feet would be caused by melting of either West Antarctica or Greenland “in the near future”.
The judge’s finding: “This is distinctly alarmist and part of Mr Gore’s ”wake-up call“. It was common ground that if Greenland melted it would release this amount of water - “but only after, and over, millennia.”
Error two
Gore: Low-lying inhabited Pacific atolls are already “being inundated because of anthropogenic global warming.”
Judge: There was no evidence of any evacuation having yet happened.
Error three
Gore: The documentary described global warming potentially “shutting down the Ocean Conveyor” - the process by which the Gulf Stream is carried over the North Atlantic to western Europe.
Judge: According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), it was “very unlikely” it would be shut down, though it might slow down.
Error four
Gore: He asserted - by ridiculing the opposite view - that two graphs, one plotting a rise in C02 and the other the rise in temperature over a period of 650,000 years, showed “an exact fit”.
Judge: Although there was general scientific agreement that there was a connection, “the two graphs do not establish what Mr Gore asserts”.
Error five
Gore: The disappearance of snow on Mt Kilimanjaro was expressly attributable to global warming.
Judge: This “specifically impressed” David Miliband, the Environment Secretary, but the scientific consensus was that it cannot be established that the recession of snows on Mt Kilimanjaro is mainly attributable to human-induced climate change.
Error six
Gore: The drying up of Lake Chad was used in the film as a prime example of a catastrophic result of global warming, said the judge.
Judge: “It is generally accepted that the evidence remains insufficient to establish such an attribution. It is apparently considered to be far more likely to result from other factors, such as population increase and over-grazing, and regional climate variability.”
Error seven
Gore: Hurricane Katrina and the consequent devastation in New Orleans to global warming.
Judge: There is “insufficient evidence to show that”.
Error eight
Gore: Referred to a new scientific study showing that, for the first time, polar bears were being found that had actually drowned “swimming long distances - up to 60 miles - to find the ice”.
Judge: “The only scientific study that either side before me can find is one which indicates that four polar bears have recently been found drowned because of a storm." That was not to say there might not in future be drowning-related deaths of bears if the trend of regression of pack ice continued - “but it plainly does not support Mr Gore’s description”.
Error nine
Gore: Coral reefs all over the world were bleaching because of global warming and other factors.
Judge: The IPCC had reported that, if temperatures were to rise by 1-3 degrees centigrade, there would be increased coral bleaching and mortality, unless the coral could adapt. But separating the impacts of stresses due to climate change from other stresses, such as over-fishing, and pollution was difficult. Read these other articles here and here as well for more info. Maybe it would be a good idea to ask you about this after you have seen it. We haven't been issued with a copy yet into the school but I gather it is supposed to be coming soon. Watch this space!
