Thanks to Doug Belshaw for highlighting this one. I know it is designed for younger kids but the sentiment is the same for all of us. Highers, Intermediates and Standard grades - that clock is ticking a bit louder now on the countdown to those exams.

Revision resources - Online Geography

A great site here summarising a lot of the stuff you will need for prelims and the final exams. Not all the sections are the same as ours as this is from the English GCSE system rather than Standard Grades but there is still a heck of a lot to keep you busy revising and taking new notes.

Is this you?
From Mark Cowan a lovely poem for you to think about. Is this you or anyone you know? What do your prelim results show? Oh dear too heavy for the weekend – sorry!

New battle over Arctic oil

With the Arctic ice-cap melting far beyond average for the second year running - and with US petrol prices above $4 per gallon - there's growing pressure to exploit the reserves beneath the seabed. Sarah Palin has her say in this report too.
A whaling captain, however, believes that drilling offshore could threaten his culture and badly affect wildlife such as the polar bears. Read the article here to see what you think.

Thanks to Richard Allaway for highlighting this video. It is a BBC docudrama. You can also follow parts 2-6 on Youtube as well. Richard warns that it may not be on for long, so watch it now if you can. Very useful for S3 and revision for S4. Prelims coming up soon!

Revision for Higher/ Int 2 and S grade

BBC Learning Zone Broadband has a lot of short video clips – many of which we have seen in class – and these are great to help you revise many sections of the course. Time is going fast now, so make sure you don’t waste any time. Link here.
Just type in Geography if you aren’t sure of a topic and browse through the clips.

More serious revision site
Revision site
Some useful stuff here but beware as this is geared up for GCSE in England it isn’t quite ideal for us. Perhaps a wee change from Scalloway and Bitesize though. Good to dip into nevertheless. Make sure you are using the GCSE tab. Higher can use this site too but you should click the A level tab. They go into things in a bit more detail than we do so don’t freak too much.

Revision for S3 exams and S4
Wee reminder of grocery store wars! Revision of farming for S4? Not really but good for a laugh anyway!
Not sure if this will put anyone off fast food or eating meat, but again just for a laugh. Sorry!
Daft one here for revision too about chemicals in the environment. Message is OK though.

Scotland Recycles

Plans are to increase the amount of municipal waste being recycled or composted to 60% by 2020 and 70% by 2025.
Other targets include limiting the amount of waste used to generate energy to a quarter by 2025 and stopping the growth of municipal waste by 2010.
New solutions for dealing with Scotland's waste are to be set out by the Scottish Government.
Watch the video here as revision for your third year exams coming up soon or for S4 revision.

Rainforest Destruction

Sad but stunning film here where the lyre bird imitates other creatures in the forest but also the sounds of the chainsaws destroying the forest! The camera shutters are fantastic but the car alarm and saws disturb me too much. What are we doing to the planet?
Brazil is losing its Amazonian forests to farmers at an unprecedented rate, satellite observations have shown. In the past 40 years, 20 per cent of the Amazon forests have been cut down and in 2004 the highest rate of deforestation in Brazil was recorded when 10,400sq miles of the habitat, described as the world's lungs, disappeared.

Devastating Deforestation

This video shows the impact deforestation is having on the indigenous peoples of the rain forest in Papua.
Extreme weather in USA

At least 15 people have died in the US as an ice storm swept through several states east of the Rocky Mountains. Watch the video here. Perhaps the weather map showing the High pressure in the East is a clue why this is happening. What do you think? S4 can explain this before their exam on Friday.
At least 17 people were killed in the central United States as a freezing storm left much of Oklahoma and Missouri under a thick coating of ice, with more wintry weather on the way. At O’Hare International Airport, about 200 flights were cancelled, with others delayed by an average of 45 minutes. Read the rest here.

Try this quiz - most of it is relevant to S grade and some to Higher or Int 2. It is a bit long but persevere if you can.

Amazon destruction

Good revision here for S4 just before your prelim and for the rest of us just to watch. Climate change and deforestation are destroying the Amazon far more quickly than previously thought, conservationists have warned. Watch the video here.
Look also at some fantastic pictures from the Guardian today at the link here illustrating exactly what is happening to this sensitive area.
By the end of the century, global warming is likely to reduce rainfall by 20% in eastern Amazonia, pushing up temperatures by more than 2C and causing forest fires, a report said today. Read the article here

At last a Scottish School apart from Scalloway which has suitable revision notes on line. Have a look at Kemnay in Aberdeenshire for a starting point. Click the S3 and 4 box at the bottom. Link here. Try also the fun page and especially the Juicy Geography link. I like the walking the Plank Games!
Nice site here for basic revision of 4 and 6 fig grid refs. Click year 7 and Grid references test on the left and then try the questions. You can do the test several times and see if you improve. Beware though this isn’t detailed enough for General or Credit! (This is the one Jamie!!)
