After the first 'quake

The aftershock did this.

The magnitude-6.0 quake struck in the middle of the night, about 35km (22 miles) north of the city of Bologna. An aftershock of 5.1 caused more buildings to collapse. The aftershock destroyed a clock tower. The tremor forced many terrified residents into the streets.More than 3,000 people were later evacuated from their homes amid fears of fresh tremors.Northern Italy is frequently rocked by little earthquakes. Japanese earthquake

As Carrick pupils know, our seismometer recorded the horrific events of the Japanese earthquake yesterday morning and we watched all day as the aftermath became evident. The tracing was very clear on our seismometer and I will add a copy of this when I go into school next week. It was heartwarming to hear the cries of sympathy from pupils in school and I was very proud of the mature attitude shown even by the youngest of pupils who showed great concern for the victims of this tragedy. New Zealand eathquake

The events across the world have been discussed a lot in class this week and I feel that I really should blog a few links to store them here. The photos here are good examples of how people feel the impact of earthquakes and how the experts from all over the world including Britain are going to help. Here is a link to an article on this. As ever the BBC have produced some amazing photos to compare the "before" and "after" situation and I think the best is seen here. There is an interesting video in the Telegraph newspaper online here. and lots of eyewitness stories here including the bride who was pulled from the rubble 3 days before she got married! There is also an article here about how buildings which were supposed to be "quake-proof" had in fact collapsed. Don't think ours would have been much better made of spaghetti and marshmallows!

Scottish Earthquake!

OK its not on the scale of the "big ones" we look at in class but its worth a look. I wonder if our seismometer picked this up as clearly as it has for the Pakistan 'quake last week. See the BBC site for info here. This was a 3.5 magnitude earthquake and there is a nice explanation here about British fault lines and why we suffer these tremors from time to time.

One day Victor The Volcano got into a fight with the snow and got really angry and decided to erupt. While doing this he blew his summit off and has left a crater on his body. As Victor errupted his ash from the cremation flowed through the air and landed on the ground which destroyed the area which made others have to evacuate and killing people which was a disaster. Victor's Bowels emptied when he died and caused a lava flow.

The UK's air traffic control service (Nats) said no flights would be allowed in UK airspace because of fears of engine damage.

Earthquake in Chile

Terrible news today of the massive 'quake in Chile earlier. It is roperted to have killed dozens of people, flattened buildings and triggered a tsunami.
The 8.8-magnitude quake, the country’s largest in 25 years, shook the capital city Santiago for a minute and half at 3:34am (6:34am our time) today.
A tsunami warning has been extended across 53 countries, including most of Central and South America and as far as Australia, Hawaii and Antarctica.

Earthquake in Haiti

As you know we have talked a lot about the dreadful events of the massive ‘quake in Haiti last week. If S2 want to do this as their case study rather than the San Francisco one then thee are a few links below to get you started. Haiti is in the Caribbean, and is the western half of an island, the eastern half of which forms the Dominican Republic.
Haiti is one of the world's poorest countries, and even before the earthquake many of its population were struggling to live.

Earthquakes

I have been really behind this week and haven't blogged about the dreadful events in Samoa and Indonesia. Tweets taking up too much of my time these days! Here is a brief summary of the events. Thousands of people may have died in remote areas when a powerful earthquake struck Sumatra. Australian, British, Japanese and South Korean rescuers have arrived in Indonesia and European countries and Russia are also sending help. As usual lots of fantastic info on the BBC website on this week’s activities. See link here. S2 in particular should look at this as we will be examining this over the next few months. Earthquake moves New Zealand towards Australia

A massive earthquake last week has brought New Zealand closer to Australia, scientists say. it was a 7.8 magnitude quake. The quake was powerful enough to generate a small tsunami with a wave of one metre (3ft) recorded on the west coast of New Zealand. It was New Zealand's biggest earthquake in 78 years. New Zealand frequently suffers earthquakes because it sits on the meeting point of the Australian and Pacific continental plates. Read the rest of this BBC article here.
