A wee session tonight on writing Higher Questions when presented with the marking schemes. A lot of good thinking was done. Well done! After this a bit of fun with a "guess what I am session" on development and health and the challenging glaciation terms. Yes -I was a prat too and ended up with a few crackers stuck to my forehead. We could only answer yes, no or maybe when each person was trying to find out what feature or process they were. Apparently everyone else does "normal" supported study sessions! I don't like to be "normal". Next week- jigsaws, more tete a tete and another little gem I've got up my sleeve! Stop sighing.

We all know Scots love their chocolate and most don't care how expensive it is. You might have to pay a lot more for it in future though as a study has revealed places growing cocoa beans will have different weather because of global warming. Samoa and the International Dateline change

Here's one for S1s who studied the International dateline last term briefly. Samoa is located approximately halfway between New Zealand and Hawaii and its population is 180,000 people Samoa now trades more with Australia and China rather than USA therefore they decided to move the dateline to keep it in the same timezone as Australia but this means it misses a whole day this year -today 30th December 2011 doesn't exist in Samoa!Here's the complete story Samoa time changealong with a short video.

Tail end of Hurricane set to hit UK

Transport links and power companies face disruption in Scotland and the north of England from the tail end of hurricane Katia.

The Tour of Britain cycle race, between Kendall and Blackpool,has been cancelled due to the dangerous and very high winds.

The M6 isone of the UK's busiest motorways and it has been closed because of the strong winds. Other roads are also closed.

The Met Office warns us of possible damage and flooding, especially in our part of Scotland! There is likely to be some disruption to roads, rail and ferry services, so travellers are advised to allow more time for journeys.

The high winds and heavy rain are expected to reach a peak on Monday afternoon and evening, so people are advised that to leave work earlier to help avoid rush-hour delays.

Japanese earthquake

As Carrick pupils know, our seismometer recorded the horrific events of the Japanese earthquake yesterday morning and we watched all day as the aftermath became evident. The tracing was very clear on our seismometer and I will add a copy of this when I go into school next week. It was heartwarming to hear the cries of sympathy from pupils in school and I was very proud of the mature attitude shown even by the youngest of pupils who showed great concern for the victims of this tragedy. The events across the world have been discussed a lot in class this week and I feel that I really should blog a few links to store them here. The photos here are good examples of how people feel the impact of earthquakes and how the experts from all over the world including Britain are going to help. Here is a link to an article on this. As ever the BBC have produced some amazing photos to compare the "before" and "after" situation and I think the best is seen here. There is an interesting video in the Telegraph newspaper online here. and lots of eyewitness stories here including the bride who was pulled from the rubble 3 days before she got married! There is also an article here about how buildings which were supposed to be "quake-proof" had in fact collapsed. Don't think ours would have been much better made of spaghetti and marshmallows!

OK its not on the scale of the "big ones" we look at in class but its worth a look. I wonder if our seismometer picked this up as clearly as it has for the Pakistan 'quake last week. See the BBC site for info here. This was a 3.5 magnitude earthquake and there is a nice explanation here about British fault lines and why we suffer these tremors from time to time.

One day Victor The Volcano got into a fight with the snow and got really angry and decided to erupt. While doing this he blew his summit off and has left a crater on his body. As Victor errupted his ash from the cremation flowed through the air and landed on the ground which destroyed the area which made others have to evacuate and killing people which was a disaster. Victor's Bowels emptied when he died and caused a lava flow.

Active Learning and a bit of theft

A great lesson from S4 this afternoon using the biscuit trading game. We had theft from Antarctica and some really hard trading from Hannah as Africa only had a crispbread to trade with but ended up with a few better things. A few only traded with their friends and then the mistrust factor wouldn't let them eat the biccies provided in case the teacher went crazy at them! When they realised there was no catch then they all disappeared apart from the one in Connor's pocket that was kept for the way home. A good introduction to the trade and aid unit I think. Apparently -the best ever Geography lesson.

Thanks to a little reminder from Kenny O'Donnell's blog we did this task a couple of weeks ago and as a consequence pupils were much more confident in their ability to explain the location of land uses when asked in mapwork questions. Their explanantions in the groups were excellent and I loved the "skippy" and cactus in our Australian settlement example. The rest of us were in Scotland and still had prevailing SW winds and as a result had the NE areas of all settlements pretty grotty. Just a wee last minute note to say Good luck to all in the Geography exams tomorrow. Don't work too late and try to be more awake than I am in the morning! See the note below regarding the standard grades "explain" type questions and use of the word "because" in your answer. Have I ever mentioned that one?!!!!!!! For the Higher be careful to look at the number of marks and choose in Paper 2 Environmental Interactions - River Basin Management Question 3 and Development and Health question 6. If one of these is a really nasty one then have a look at the Rural Land Resources question 1 to see if you make a better attempt at it. Don't be tempted to look at the rest.
Intermediates - look at the number of marks and use all the resources you have been given. You have a choice of answering 2 from River Basin Management / Development and Health / Environmental Hazards. remember though you haven't done the last in a huge amount of detail, so I would only do this in an emergency. Finally girls the pic is apparently a symbol of good luck for you! OK I think it is meant to be the tattoos but I didn't think you would care.

Hi folks
I hope you are all working hard for Mrs Lyon and Miss Grant. Highers should finish the biosphere by Easter. Make sure you have seen a few past papers on this and the Rural needs to be finished soon too. Listen to Mrs Lyon - she knows her stuff! You will need to do some of this at home but I know this won't be a problem! You will move on to the section on the Hyrdrosphere after this ie rivers. This is a good section. It is easy and has a bit of mapwork in it too to make it easy to pick up marks. All will be doing the same stuff too. Intermediates_ how is the env hazards doing? I hope you are nearly finished the sheets and ready to see the videos this week. Ask Miss Grant or Mr Brown to set up the tv and video for you for this - I know a bit antequated but the film is good! You have questions with part one but the rest you can just watch. Watch also the next sections -called "the science" after each bit. Don't cry at the sad bits!.
S4 Your comments are on Glow already along with lots of revision stuff. Work well for Mrs L and Mr W. S3 are ready to do your tests. Good Luck! Rivers after that will be a dawdle.

Terrible news today of the massive 'quake in Chile earlier. It is roperted to have killed dozens of people, flattened buildings and triggered a tsunami.
The 8.8-magnitude quake, the country’s largest in 25 years, shook the capital city Santiago for a minute and half at 3:34am (6:34am our time) today.
A tsunami warning has been extended across 53 countries, including most of Central and South America and as far as Australia, Hawaii and Antarctica.

Researchers have mapped the genes of Artemisia annua to allow selection of high-yield varieties. Artemisinin combination therapies, or ATCs, are used widely to treat malaria and are seen as the best solution to the disease. ACTs are expensive and demand threatens to outstrip supply.
Plant breeding, new drugs and clever ways to make artemisinin in the lab are the answer, according to world experts.
Scientists hope a better supply of the drug might also help with the problem of fake drugs being distributed.

Haiti is in the Caribbean, and is the western half of an island, the eastern half of which forms the Dominican Republic.
Haiti is one of the world's poorest countries, and even before the earthquake many of its population were struggling to live.

The snow that fell on Beijing last week was the heaviest for many years. It was also, China claims, man-made. Some areas of farmland in the north of China were suffering because of drought. So on Saturday night China's meteorologists (weather experts) fired 186 explosive rockets with chemicals to "seed" clouds and encourage snow to fall. The US has tried this in California. The chemicals fired into the sky, usually dry ice or silver iodide, are supposed to provide a surface for water vapour to form rain. But there is little evidence that it works – after all, how do we know it would not have rained anyway? Such doubts have not stopped China claiming tha they did control the weather. Officials said the blue skies that were over Beijing's parade to celebrate 60 years of communism were a result of cloud-seeding. In 2008, more than 1,000 rockets were fired to ensure a dry night for last year's Olympic opening ceremony. As interest grows, so does concern about whether such techniques, known as geoengineering, are good for the planet and humans. "If climate change turns ugly, then many countries will start looking at desperate measures," says an energy expert ." Geoengineering worries experts for two reasons. First, the massive side effects; what it could do to the world's rainfall, for example. Second, once started, geoengineering would probably have to be continued, as stopping could bring lots of changes in climate.
With a lot of potential disasters some say, there must be a law against geoengineering. What do you think?

It's Chocolate Week, in case you needed an excuse for more chocolate. Here’s some information about different types we have mentioned in class.
• Traidcraft has been fighting poverty through trade, with all its profits going back to the producers. It has made a commitment to convert to sustainable palm oil for all of its products. Good news for the orang utangs.
• Divine Chocolate Kuapa Kokoo, the farmers' co-operative that produces the cocoa for Divine.
Outside of these ethical leaders, the chocolate trade is anything but sweet. More than a third of cocoa traded globally comes from Ivory Coast recently 54 children were rescued from slave labour, from its plantations. Violence in the country since 2002 has also been called the "chocolate war, with hundreds dying in conflicts over the cocoa trade.
In February, the Gates Foundation pledged £14.4m to examine conditions in the west African trade. Hershey, Kraft Foods and Mars have pledged a further £26.3m to the project. And since Cadbury's Dairy Milk brand went Fairtrade – things are perhaps looking up for these children and adults.
Chocolate is a good example of how ethical consumption can change things in the world. Even before Dairy Milk's decision sales of Fairtrade chocolate in the UK grew from £1m in 1998 to £26.8m in 2008. Cadbury's will be supplied by Kuapa Kokoo, the co-op that co-owns Divine. If it hadn’t been for Divine spending years working with farmers and educating people like us about this issue, there's no way Cadbury's could have changed to Fairtrade.

Earthquakes

I have been really behind this week and haven't blogged about the dreadful events in Samoa and Indonesia. Tweets taking up too much of my time these days! Here is a brief summary of the events. Thousands of people may have died in remote areas when a powerful earthquake struck Sumatra. Australian, British, Japanese and South Korean rescuers have arrived in Indonesia and European countries and Russia are also sending help. As usual lots of fantastic info on the BBC website on this week’s activities. See link here. S2 in particular should look at this as we will be examining this over the next few months. Limestone coastal erosion

Nice example here of erosion at the coast and of how limestone reacts naturally to water.

These 12 rocks are named after the Apostles in the Bible but the name is not strictly true now. Can you find out how many are left? They are in the Port Campbell National Park near Melbourne, Australia.
